Yamaha, as we now know it, was established in 1887 as a piano and reed organ manufacturer by Torakusu Yamaha as Nippon Gakki Company Ltd. After World War II, company president Genichi Kawakami repurposed the remains of the company’s war-time production machinery and the company’s expertise in metallurgical technologies to the manufacture of motorcycles.
Now, Yamaha is a respected and renowned manufacturer of Musical Instruments, Audio-Visual Equipment, Computer-Related products, Sporting Goods, Home Appliances, Industrial Robots amongst other things. The first motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha in 1954 was a copy of the German-made DKW; the Yamaha was called the YA-1.
For the first few years following the YA-1, Yamaha introduced some new bikes and in 1964 it launched the world’s first oil injection lubrication system in a 2-stroke engine. Four years later in 1968, they launched their first off-road motorcycle, the DT-1. These days, one of the most recognised Motorcycle Brand in the world on-road, off-road and in many 2-wheel world competitions, Yamaha is a definite benchmark brand that many top world athletes have been proud to associate themselves with. The logo is a representation of a ‘tuning fork’ and has had several visual inceptions since 1898.
